The first time I saw the Wendy Williams Show, I couldn’t wrap my head around what was happening. There was celebrity gossip, an interview with a d-list celebrity that seemed to cover the topics of wigs and plastic surgery, and an extended segment where audience members solicited advice from Williams on deeply personal issues. Instantly, I was transfixed.
In a Facebook/Twitter world, Wendy is the ultimate host. Brash, boisterous, and full of boobs, the show floats effortlessly from theme to theme, most of which revolve around Williams’ drag-queen-esque persona. While Tyra spends an hour each day trying convince us that she’s not the most egocentric talk show host in existence, Wendy is smart enough to know that’s exactly what keeps her audience coming back. She’s the host who pulls notes from her wig, spends 10 minutes playing with paper doll Kardashians, and then chases flies around the studio. If it wasn’t all so brilliant, I’d say we were being punked on a national scale. And I haven’t even covered the concept that cigarette lighter + Slim Jim = snack.
It seems word of Williams’ unique mix of talent is leaking out, from her regular appearances on The Soup to a feature in this Sunday’s Times Magazine. If you haven’t seen her show, here are a few clips, and you can catch it locally 2 p. m. on the CW 23 or visit her on the web at wendyshow.com. Tell Wendy I sent you… we’re already friends in my head.
